The rental stores listed below have so far weathered the storm of declining DVD sales amid the Video on Demand and Red Box revolution by specializing in many movies sought by the discriminating viewer. The staffs are usually very knowledgeable and what they don’t know they can usually look up quickly. I urge local movie fans to support these great resources and their employees by renting from them on a regular basis. All of the rental resources listed below (except Odyssey Video) have online catalogues available so you can look up what you’re looking for before visiting the store in person. Almost all the rental stores have good deals on used videos for sale.

Eddie Brandt’s is the granddaddy of specialty video rental stores in Los Angeles. The business started as a memorabilia store carrying posters, lobby cards and stills. Eddie himself was an arranger/composer for Spike Jones and Spade Cooley before working in animation. Eddie passed away at the age of 90 in 2011, but his son Donovan, (who grew up in the store) and employees like Tony and Alex possess a depth of knowledge to help you find what you are looking for. Among their holdings (besides a wealth of memorabilia) are VHS tapes of titles that have not yet come to DVD. It is not uncommon to see celebrity clients in the store like Joanna Cassidy (BLADERUNNER) or John C. Reilly (CHICAGO). There is also a lending library of rare titles that you can access for free when you rent a video. Do yourself a favor and check out the store out on a Saturday morning when you are likely to find free donuts on the counter.

Only a couple blocks away from Eddie Brandt’s Saturday Matinee is Odyssey Video. Although it isn’t as specialized a store as as Eddie’s, Odyssey has been around for many years so they have a sizable collection of movies. There is no online listing of available titles so it’s best to give them a call or drop by in person.

But with recent conversion to a non-profit supported by contributions of filmmakers and patrons, Vidiots continues its mission of protecting the Vidiots collection of over 50,00 rare and classic titles, preserving its availability, and promoting cinema through outreach and events that bring together filmmakers and film lovers.
